Can You Buy One for Yourself?

The gifting rule, what it actually says, and when self-purchase is completely fine.

The most repeated 'rule' in the tradition is that an evil eye must be gifted to work — and like most repeated rules, the real version is softer than the internet's. The strong form belongs mostly to Greek and Turkish family practice, where the charm is woven into relationships: the grandmother pins it, the aunt brings it from the old country, and the gift's warmth is understood to be part of the armour. In that context, yes — given beats bought.

But the tradition never actually forbids self-purchase, and several of its oldest uses assume it: the shopkeeper hangs his own bead over his own till, the driver knots her own charm to her own mirror, the builder sets one into his own wall. Nobody gifts a lorry driver his drishti mask. Protection you install for yourself has always been legitimate; the gifting rule is about jewellery's social life, not about a licensing requirement.

The workable modern reading: if a charm comes to you as a gift, receive it as the stronger form and wear it with its story. If you need one and nobody is offering, buy it with intention — choose the color deliberately, put it on with a purpose in mind — and the tradition's own precedents stand behind you. And if the rule still nags, there is a two-person fix as old as it is charming: buy two, give one to a friend, and have them hand yours back.
